From March 10th 2014, foreigners and Vietnamese nationals holding foreign passports can enjoy 30 day visa exemption when visiting Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang, according to a new decision of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
According to the decision of mechanism and specific policies for the development of Phu Quoc, foreigners and Vietnamese nationals holding foreign passports entering and exiting Phu Quoc will have chance to enjoy 30 day visa exemption.
In the case that foreigners entering an international border gate of Vietnam (including by air and by sea) and staying in the transit area before departing to Phu Quoc also are applied to this decision.
The duration of visa exemption is twice as long as previous that in 2005. The extension will promote tourism development of Phu Quoc which immediately has received good reaction from tourism businesses.
To deal with the electricity shortage on the island where most of the power are provided by diesel generators, an undersea electric cable from Kien Giang’s Ha Tien town to Phu Quoc Island has been completely constructed.
As a district of the southern Mekong Delta province, Phu Quoc Island has a total area of 574 square kilometers and a population of about 85,000. Phu Quoc was recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2006.
